There is so much noise in today’s world. With the ability to always be connected comes less ability to take steps back and turn off the noise.
With today’s busy lifestyles, most of us live in constant chaos with high stress and anxiety. Jobs are more demanding than ever before. Trust me, I was there. My stress and anxiety had consumed my life. I couldn’t enjoy anything and was grasping for anything that could assist me in getting some type of relief.
Now, I frequently discuss turning off the noise. To me this is breaking down the items causing my anxiety.
If my anxiety is coming from tasks that need completed, I force myself to write a list of only the tasks that MUST be accomplished today. I let go of the rest of the noise for another day.
If my anxiety is being driven by conversations and relationships with others. I force myself to take a step back and break down the scenario.
- Have I talked to the person about the issue? Maybe it is just a misunderstanding.
- Is the issue important enough to be hijacking my mental health?
- Can I remove myself from the situation with little impact to my future?
- Am I the issue and can I resolve the matter by changing my decision or my view point?
Being wrong, allowing others to take charge, letting go of hurt feelings or moving on are great ways to immediately alleviate stress and anxiety. I used to think these were signs of weakness. Turns out, these are signs of great strength and wisdom. This is you recognizing a situation is not in your best interest and should be resolved. Who cares if you admit your wrong even if you aren’t (accept of course in larger circumstances that could impact you financially or your reputation). Your mental health is more important than proving anything to anyone!
I know longer allow these things to affect my mental health. I PROTECT MY MENTAL HEALTH.
Wait you do what? Yes, this is a thing and this is the most important thing I taught myself. Life is too important to spend so much time worrying about what other people think.
For those that are connected with your faith. I also, read a great book that helped me remember to give things up to God. I mean literally, I hold my hands in the air, think about what I have been worried and abscessing about and say, “TAKE IT! Please take this for me!” I promise you, he is listening.
My husband and I will have conversations about stressful work items, recently I find myself reminding him that work isn’t what really matters, we (his family) are what really matters. The rest is just noise.
